Part of the 2018 Ottawa Fringe Festival

Odd Job Ninja is very excited to present “How to Get Over a Guy in 723 Days (and Other Useful Things I Learned from Afghanistan, the Dildo Dory Grill, and PTSD)” by Judy Reid (that’s me!) at the 2018 Ottawa Fringe Festival.

Breaking up is hard to do. Breaking up while dealing with weird PTSD symptoms like crying whenever you hear Carly Rae Jepson’s “Call Me Maybe” is just waaaaay harder. This is my story of how working in Kandahar Airfield for four years changed me, and the lessons I learned as I tried to cope with crying jags, freaking out on public transit, and paying good money for shitty under-eye concealer.  Useful lessons such as:

  • Don’t run during a rocket attack;
  • When cracking up in a relationship, it’s best if at least one of you isn’t crazy;
  • Decorating your motorcycle with Michael’s scrapbook paper isn’t as easy as it looks;
  • Peeling 50 lbs of potatoes in the Dildo Dory Grill basement is paid meditation;
  • Going to a sex club might help you more than Prozac, Zoloft or Wellbutrin; and
  • Panicking on stage during improv = less freaking out in life.

My recovery from PTSD is a work in progress, but taking my first improv class in 2017 brought me dramatic relief. I’m still taking classes at the Improv Embassy, testing the waters of stand-up, and am now a cast member and a contributing writer for the Shit Hot Shit Show, Ottawa’s only regularly performing sketch comedy troupe (which is also performing in this year’s Fringe).

Improv was so helpful in teaching me to calm the f*ck down, that I’m donating half the profits from my Fringe show to the Improv Embassy to fund a 4-week Intro to Improv class specifically for people dealing with PTSD, anxiety and other issues. I’m not kidding, panicking on stage during improv = less freaking out in life.

This is my first time taking part in the Ottawa Fringe and I am so looking forward to this experience. I hope you make it out to LOTS of shows this year to support the brave, daring, and talented artists performing June 14 to 24. Oh – and check out my show too. C’mon out and get your Fringe on!
